Warmth

(Well! That lettering didn't work out, did it?)

Got a brochure in the mail today for CPE sessions in faraway, warm resort locales. I took one look at this cover and thought, "Ohhh...I want to go there!"

Kudos to the advertising guys for this company. They made me want their product.

It was cold, wet and icky today. I wanted to be anywhere warm. The chill was seeping through all my layers of clothing. I just couldn't get warm enough.

Process notes:
I was tired of the same old title lettering I've been using. It's quick, easy, and brainless so I tend to use it quite a bit. I wanted to experiment with a different kind of lettering. Um, *FAIL*.

I couldn't figure out which parts of the letters should be fat and which should be just single lines. I guess I need to work out the whole alphabet so the letters will at least appear to be from the same font type. I've got a mixture of styles going on here. Not good. But a sketchbook is the place to work through that kinda stuff, right???

"W" and "M" are hard letters to get to look right in some 'fonts'... I've been all over the map this year with fonts myself. I so admire KDBlados her lettering is different on almost every page, and yet perfect... so it can be done, I'm just not there yet. I will admit that I 'cheat' sometimes, I go to free online font sites, find one I like and do a 'preview' of the word or words I want for my page... and then I copy that onto my page... don't tell anyone I do that ok :-) I think next year I'm going to try to do more 2 page spreads, and put 'titles' on my pages like you do.
Happy New Year Speck... I do enjoy your musings and your drawings.

Karen's lettering is always so fun and happy looking. She's so talented she probably invented that out of her head. (sigh) I can only dream.

Oh, yes, yes, yes, do 2-page spreads! Working across the valley is a little challenging at first but you'll get the hang of it. Two-pagers give you the space to draw big. Bigger is better!

And a very Happy New Year to you too Capt Elaine!

Hope everything is okay with you...it's been forever since you've posted. Not that I'm posting much these days either, but you usually post more than me anyway!

Nice sketch, and I think the randomness of your letters is what gives them their charm! Great blog.

Speck... are you ok? It's been ages since anyone has heard from you... don't make us come find you and drag you back to your sketchbook... LOL Really... hope all is well with you... we miss you and your artwork very much.

Capt Elaine - My sketching partner Miz Dee has been housebound since her surgery in November and my life this winter has been rather boring. The inspiration to sketch just hasn't been there.

I doodled some stuff in my written journal last night and it felt good to draw after so long. Trouble is, I'm kinda bored with what I have been drawing. I need a new direction with my artwork. I just don't know what that is yet.

Miz Dee says I need to do larger pieces and get my nose out of the sketchbook. That doesn't seem to thrill me either. What to do? What to do?

I've been playing a lot lately with fountain pens and inks and stationery. I could draw all of my "Squee!" moments with those. Would that be interesting or boring??? I would hate to be boring.
