Water - drink lots of water. Also I found that the lozenges work better for me than the patches - gives me something in my mouth (just don't eat too many) - Good luck, I'm right there with you - this is my third attempt to quit.

Julie - Thanks for the tips. I'm having major trouble with the oral fixation part. I gnaw on my fingernails a lot lately. Man, this is *hard*.

Sending strength and fortitude your way with your struggle.

Ex smoker here... darling... this is the hardest addition in the WORLD to break, tougher than heroin I'm told...
I did it the last time... and yes in my life I've quit many times sometimes for years at a time... but cold turkey worked for me, within a 48 hours I was a little better... if you do the patches, gum or lozenges... you're still getting the drug nicotine.. so you've not gotten the monkey off your back till you can quit them too.
It is such an addiction that more than 5 years since my last cigarette I still DREAM about smoking one.. it wakes me up in the middle of the night... so you may ALWAYS want them... you just have to NOT buy them and DO NOT ever put another one in your mouth. Brushing your teeth when you crave one helps, chewing on a pencil ... a short one the length of a cig... you can put it in your mouth, play with it in your hands...
Good luck honey... it isn't easy but it IS WORTH it.
Oh I was a 3 pack a day smoker for 30 years... so I've been there.

Hang in there. I gnaw on my fingernails and I never smoked. I can't quit but it's not a physical withdrawal. It's tough but you can do it. Keep drawing. Try walking, running, walking. My husband quit when I met him; I broke his cigarettes and he wanted to date me so he quit cold turkey. You can quit too. One day at a time.

By the way, your sketches are terrific. You'll enjoy looking back on this later.

Capt Elaine - I tried cold turkey a couple of weeks ago. Well, I was still smoking 4-5 a day. By Day 7 I thought I was going to lose my mind. Decided I needed a little help. Smoked up my stash so I wouldn't be tempted and slapped on a patch. Hopefully I can learn some healthier habits then wean off the drug. I reach for a cig without even thinking. That mental habit is what I need to change in the next few weeks.

freebird - I have the ambition to go walking but we still have temps in the 100s here. People are dying - literally. The walking thing will have to wait for cooler weather.

And thanks!
