Presents from Nana

Yes, I'm milking this birthday present thing for all it's worth. I don't usually get birthday presents, just cards and phone calls. So this birthday was an exceptionally Woo-Hoo! birthday...the most joyful one in a long, long time.

Journaling (to save your eyesight):
A box full of goodies arrived in the mail from Nana. She said the book [Making Handmade Books, 100+ Bindings, Structures & Forms] was on backorder and arrived just in time for her to pack it and ship it to me.

She got to flip through it for just a few minutes before packing it. She said she wanted to keep it for herself. I can understand why. When I opened it I was transfixed for an hour.

The Guardian Angel necklace was cool because I don't have much opportunity to wear her Guardian Angel pins anymore. I can wear the necklace all the time.

I think the cool retro stationery came from a thrift store which, to me, makes it even cooler.

The cat was on the front of the card which read, "In honor of your birthday, Bootsy pulled a piece of yarn out of his butt just for you!"

I have a very strange sister.

RIP Smudge

Took Smudge to the vet for the final time today. She did not put up much of a fight.

We buried her under the bridal wreath bush in the backyard next to Molly and Beluga.

Then we cried.

She was a good kitty.

I Don't Feel Good Mommy

Chelsea, age 17, hasn't been acting normal lately. She's been having diarrhea and didn't eat anything for two days. That's not good at her age. Bought some really stinky food for sick cats and she ate a little bit of that.

She just looks like she doesn't feel good. She lays "too flat" for lack of a better way to describe it. This morning she started sneezing non-stop. Sacked her up and took her to the vet.

He ran tests and poked and prodded. Said all her blood work was absolutely perfect and he couldn't find a thing wrong with her. He gave her a shot of antibiotics in case she had some kind of upper respiratory infection. Said to take her home and try to get some weight back on her. She had lost over a pound since March. Not good.

Bought more cans of the incredibly stinky food for both my elder citizen kittehs.

Chelsea: 17 people years x 7 = 119 kitteh years
Smudge: 15 people years x 7 = 105 kitteh years

Tonight:

Hubby: "There's something on the back of your leg...oh, it fell off."

Me: "I hate it when bits of my leg start falling off."

Liver Failure

Journaling:

Smudge has been looking rather ratty and moth-eaten lately. She just looked like she didn't feel good. Input and output were normal but her hipbones were starting to protrude. She had lost too much weight. Sacked her up and took her to the vet.

He took one look at her and said, "Liver failure...and at her age (15 years) the prognosis isn't good." I hadn't noticed that her ears and eyes were turning yellow due to jaundice. Oy vey.

The vet ran tests and her liver enzymes were only on the high side of normal. He gave her a shot of antibiotics and a shot of steroids. Said to take her home and love her up and try to get some weight back on her.

She wolfed down a can of tuna fish when she got home and seems to be perkier. Maybe the steroids relieved some pain she may have had.

Now it's just wait and see. It's going to be a long summer.

Kitty Helps Daddy Read

Journaling:

Hubby has infinite patience with our little furry housemates, even if it means he has to read with a catbutt on his chin and a fuzzy tail up his nose.

He'll stay in an uncomfortable position for an hour just so he won't disturb the cat on his chest or in his lap. He'll do anything for the comfort and convenience of the kittehs.

He's a saint.

Still Life with Cat and Pickles

"Still Life with Cat and Pickles"
Watercolor and gouache
4" x 6"

This started out as the color study for yesterday's sketch, but I had so much fun playing in the paint pan I just finished it out and signed it.

No self-depreciating critical commentary today. Just a happy little woot - woot!

A little background on this painting...

I *love* the TV show Hoarders on A&E. There is an on-line forum about the show at Television Without Pity (TWoP). The tagline there is "Spare the Snark, Spoil the Networks."

One snarker, posting as lorax523, wrote about a Season 1 episode, "There was one shot early in the show that was just so surreal, it was like a Magritte painting. The Siamese cat, placidly sitting next to a giant jar of pickles from Sam's Club. Still Life with Cat and Pickles."

The cat and pickles have now become a running joke on the boards. Even though I have seen every Season 1 episode at least twice, I have yet to see this particular shot. My active little imagination concocted one to paint.

Thanks to lorax523 for the title and all the snarkers on the TWoP board for the inspiration.

Cat with Pickles

This is a concept sketch for a future painting. The idea has been bouncing around in my brain for a while.

I'm thinking of painting it Van Gogh-ish with all bright, pure colors and the brush marks showing; soft edges on the cat, harder edges on the jar.

It would be gouache or acrylic (if I ever get around to opening the set). I don't think my vision could be realized in watercolor.

Here's the color scheme:

And the weirdness factor of the day...

This is an image from a dream I had several nights ago. It got stuck in my gray matter and I had to draw it out to get rid of it.

It was an erotic dream.

Send in the shrink.

I asked Hubby what he thought it was. He said a uterus with fallopian tubes. Um, no.

You are welcome to venture a guess what it is, but I'm not tellin'.

Gesture Drawings

Realized last night that the art books from the library were due back on Monday. Had to crack one of them open for the first time today.

The Natural Way to Draw by Kimon Nicolaides was published after his death in 1938. It has been THE how-to-draw book for decades. My three-penny review is that it is more a how-to book on seeing rather than drawing. There are no tips or tricks on drawing per se, but how to think, feel and relate to the subject.

He uses four kinds of drawings:

1) Blind contour - Draw slowly without looking at the paper, *feeling* along the edge of the subject with the pencil as if you are touching the edge of the subject with your finger.

2) Gesture drawing - A scribbly type of drawing to capture the essence of the thing as a whole, not concentrating on any details, just the motion or gesture of the subject.

3) Weighted drawing - Mashing the pencil to the paper to make darker scribbles where the weight of the subject would occur: hips, thighs, the leg with weight on it.

4) Modelled drawing - Mashing the pencil into the paper to make blacker marks where the form of the subject goes away from you and lighter where it comes closer. Similar to a sculptor mashing his thumbs into a clay head to form the sides of the nose.

And that's it. That's all the kind of drawing exercises there are, just in different media: Pencil, charcoal, watercolor, oil.

To use the book properly would take a year of hard work, and that is no exaggeration. There are 64 exercises, each one having five sections, and each section requiring three or more hours of drawing 40 or so drawings. The basic premise seems to be that if you draw three hours a day every day for a year you'll get better. Ya think???

The only part of the book that stuck with me was the gesture drawing. Nicolaides said that in 30 seconds you should have a whole, recognizable form on the paper. Oy. Thought I'd give that concept a shot. So I trotted out on the porch with the big Black N Red to watch Hubby rake the last of the leaves.

Hubby was taking a break on the porch and that was a good thing. It was less daunting to draw him sitting than trying to draw him raking leaves. Usually if I ask to draw him he immediately finds a pressing matter to which he must attend and bolts. He actually agreed to sit absolutely still for a few minutes while I drew.

Sitting 1:
Sitting 2:
Reclining:Hubby said these were OK but they make him look like he has a big ol' belly and moobs. He does have a big ol' belly and moobs.

Hubby got bored with posing and went back to his leaf raking, so I drew the neighbor's car.

Hubby took another break and Cheezburger joined him for a little lap time:
They sat there together for a long while, so I started adding facial features. Shouldn't have done that.

Hubby went back to work, so Cheezy became my sketching victim:

Then Hubby got a phone call....

...and switched the phone to the other ear.

The neighbor came out to chat and inspect:
Believe it or not, the drawing on the right is recognizable as the neighbor. That one gets a Woot! The drawing on the left with the thin lines is where I showed them to her and had to trace the features so she could understand what the scribbles represented. I thought it was obvious but she was having trouble seeing it.

Tried tackling Hubby actually raking leaves:

Hubby finally wore himself out raking and piled up on the porch to cool off. I drew the only part of him I could see as a whole from a distance of two feet, his arms:

I realize these are rough drawings, not really post-worthy, but they are valuable to me because something clicked in my brain about halfway through them. I got it. I got what Nicolaides was attempting to teach his students through repetitive drawing exercises. I have a new way of seeing things as a whole, not just as the sum of their parts. Eureka!

Dream Clouds & Chelsea

Decided to take a break from drawing and computer and just flomp on the couch watching TV all day. Dozed in and out. Had a weird half-waking dream of an image of clouds with lines. Thought about it all day and drew it this evening.

The part I dreamed was really just the upper left corner of this. I filled in the rest to fill the page.

I try to pay attention to my dreams. It could be valuable information the universe is trying to send me. Or I could just be a lunatic. Either way, I pay attention.

Also drew Chelsea sleeping in the middle of the living room rug. That's an odd place for her. Had to draw since she was still for once. Any other time I've tried to draw her she could feel me lookin' at her and would move.

Brush Pen Doodles

Late-night doodles, drawn while watching a marathon of Barrett-Jackson car auction on TV, drawing whatever is in front of me, then whatever poops out of my brain.

Showed the first one to Hubby:

"Do you recognize it?"

"No, should I?"

"It's the coaster you sit your Pepsi can on every day."

"Oh."

(eye roll)

Daddy's Chair - Where he reigns supreme over the household. (snort) The hump in the seat is one of those cotton hull neck pillows.

The fringed wool blanket on the table is for Smudge the Cat. She likes to sit in Hubby's lap because he is warm and she is old and gets chilly. He won't get up if she's in his lap even if he has to pee. So the blanket was the solution. It was that or Depends.

Red Cat

This was supposed to be an orange cat but it got away from me. This is one of those instances where "it looked better 20 minutes ago."

Sigh.

This was also supposed to be more primative but I seem to have an addiction to shading and perspective. Now it's a weird mishmash of styles.

Le sigh.

If I could delete the red cat and the lamp it would be a pretty cute little sketch.

Oh well, it was just an experiment anyway.

The Grieving Process

Funeral doings are hard on the waistline. Oy.
(Drawn in the emergency sketchbook.)

Sometimes the best thing to do is snuggle a cat or two. Or six.

Cheezburger the Guard Cat

After failing so badly at being painterly, I retreated to the safety and security of drawings cats in pen and ink.

This is Cheezburger's attack position. He may look like he's lounging, but his eyes are open and he is scoping out his territory for interlopers - squirrels, cats, coons, or the mailman.

He hangs his head off the edge of the porch to get a sightline down the front of the house behind the bushes. There might be some ninja crickets or lizards down there needing to be repelled.

Cheezy actually likes the mailman because the mailman thinks Cheezy is a cool cat and pets him every day. The mailman's arrival is the high point of Cheezy's afternoon.

Fail Book 2 - Daddy Snores

Motto for The Fail Book: Draw big, Ink fat, Color bright.

Scribble-scribbling with a fat pen trying to do "loose" scribbley sketches. The more I draw the tighter they get. Sigh.

Why are cats compelled to sleep on any reading material? It seems like sleeping on a book would poke her in the ribs.

Chelsea Waits and Watches

My antique kitty Chelsea has become quite the Velcro cat lately. She follows me around like a puppydog. When I sit on the porch in the evening she sits by the door waiting and watching for my return. I don't know what's gotten into her lately. It's very uncatlike behavior.

Process notes:
I broke out my PITT brush pen on this one, trying to get to a good place with it. I'd say this was a Fail. I'm too heavy-handed with it. Must work on that.

As I watched Chelsea through the glass storm door I was struck by the play of the warm interior light framed by the stark blackness of the night. I wanted to try and capture that.

I don't think I got the frame of the "blackness of the night" quite black enough. I fiddled with the scanned image to see if darkening the border would help. It looked worse, so here it is as painted.

Posting the successes as well as the failures.

Smudge Study

Daddy was away overnight so Smudge and I piled up in bed with all manner of art supplies and watched Sherlock Holmes and Bob Hope movie marathons on TCM. We stayed up all night long (or maybe that was just me) while I cut and pasted bits in my big leather sketchbook and then doodled a bit.

Smudge was sleeping like log at the foot of the bed so it was a primo opportunity to draw her. When I finished the first sketch and was looking around for something else to draw, she awoke, gave a big stretch, and rearranged. Goody! A new pose.

But now she could sense me looking at her and wouldn't be still. Oh well, cats have never been known to be good models. The second and third poses were a bit rushed because she was antsy and I was trying to "git 'er drawn" before she moved again.

Only Sweet When Sleeping

Since Cheezburger got four sketches yesterday, Smudge gets her 15 seconds of fame today.

A Boy and His Cat

Was busy this weekend and didn't have time or energy to draw. Gasp!

I've been admiring the "real life" sketches of other artists and wanted to practice capturing a moving, wiggling subject. So this evening I followed Hubby around the house and recorded his activities (or lack thereof.) With Hubby I got Cheezburger also...fifteen pounds of warm, furry love.

(click to embiggen)

Cheezburger: "Let me put my butt on your arm."

There is a definite progression in the drawing style from #1 to #4. I tried to capture tooooo many details at first. By #4 I was just trying to get down the essence of the scene.

Need to work on hands - too long, too short, to square-fingered. Toes look pretty good.
